MenB Campaign: Strong Start Across Thames Valley
The launch of the Year 13 MenB vaccination campaign has seen strong early demand across the Thames Valley, proving once again how vital our local pharmacy network is in delivering essential healthcare. Meningococcal group B remains a serious risk for young adults—particularly those preparing to head off to university, college, or new routines where close contact increases transmission. Thanks to the hard work of our community pharmacy teams, young people across our region are gaining rapid, convenient access to this life-saving protection right in their own neighbourhoods. |
|
|
|
Initial reports show high engagement and appointment bookings, reflecting how much local families value the accessibility and trusted care offered by their high street pharmacies. By stepping up to deliver this crucial rollout, our CP Neighbourhood leads and pharmacy staff are directly protecting our young people as they take their next big steps in life. A huge thank you to all the pharmacy teams across the Thames Valley whose dedication ensures this new service runs smoothly and continues to safeguard our communities! |
FINALIST! Best Supporting Local Representative |
We are thrilled to share that Community Pharmacy Thames Valley (CPTV) has been shortlisted for the Best Supporting Local Representative Group award! This national recognition highlights our team's continuous dedication to supporting, representing, and advocating for our 328 community pharmacy contractors across Berkshire, Oxfordshire, and Buckinghamshire. . |

Over the past year, CPTV has worked tirelessly to ensure our contractors remain at the forefront of local healthcare delivery. From securing over £350,000 in new local commissioning—including palliative care, PCN Leads, and minor ailments—to establishing representation on every local Primary Care Provider Collaborative board, we have ensured your voice is heard at every strategic level. This nomination also celebrates the incredible engagement of our pharmacy workforce and the expansion of our dedicated professional development initiatives. Through the launch of the CPTV Pharmacy Academy, we have delivered tailored webinars, workshops, key events like the Women’s Health Conference, and a growing library of 39 podcasts designed to support you in delivering expanding NHS services. Beyond training, our co-founding of SECPA Ltd has helped keep funding local by subcontracting vital vaccination, ENT, and MECC services directly back to community pharmacies. We want to extend a sincere thank you to all our local pharmacy teams whose hard work, clinical excellence, and resilience make achievements like this possible! |

Thames Valley 2026 Progress Report: High Engagement, Compliance and Service Growth
Thames Valley pharmacies have kicked off 2026 with real momentum, and the MenB Vaccination Service is the headline act. With more than 80% of contractors signed up and every RAV completed on time, our region has delivered one of the strongest launches in the South East. The activity levels speak for themselves — Thames Valley pharmacies didn’t just join the service; they owned it. |
|
|
|
This is exactly the kind of coordinated excellence that puts our contractors at the front of the queue for future commissioned vaccination programmes. Over in Oxfordshire, harm reduction services are seeing a surge thanks to the focused support of our new Liaison Officer, Naomi Shepherd. Since April, pharmacies have moved to consistent monthly claiming for SC/NX and Naloxone, improving cashflow and building a solid foundation for sustained service growth. Naomi’s hands on induction and targeted contractor support are already paying off, and Oxfordshire’s early results show just how quickly good practice can spread when the right support is in place. Pharmacy First continues to be a standout performer across Thames Valley. EHC consultations are ahead of expectations, and despite fewer formal GP referrals, the October 2025 threshold changes are helping more pharmacies secure payments. April’s data shows Thames Valley well ahead of national averages, with nearly two thirds of contractors achieving full PF payment. The challenge now is simple: too many pharmacies are just missing thresholds payments and are not monitoring their consultations. Weekly consultation checks focus the mind to ensure pharmacies have a final month end push to ensure full PF payments — and ensure every contractor gets the income they’ve deserve. “What you monitored, gets improved”.

Capitalise on GP Target 6: Boost Your NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service (PCS)
General practice incentive schemes across our region now include a dedicated integration target for the NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service (PCS)
Under Target 6 – GP and Community Pharmacy Integration, GP practice teams are required to identify local pharmacies providing the PCS and meet with at least one pharmacy to establish scope, capacity, and referral pathways. Practices must also implement action plans to signpost eligible patients to pharmacy via text messaging, opportunistic contacts, and national campaign resources. This creates a prime opportunity to build stronger local relationships and drive patient volume to your pharmacy.
What GP Practices Are Required to Do? To satisfy Target 6, practice teams must: • Connect with local pharmacies: Arrange a meeting with at least one community pharmacy to discuss service scope (initiation, ongoing supply, and Emergency Hormonal Contraception) and capacity. • Embed proactive signposting: Set up pathways to direct patients requesting routine contraception reviews, repeat supplies, or emergency contraception to community pharmacy. • Utilize patient communication channels: Send targeted text messages (e.g., via Accurx) with links to pharmacy contraception options and display NHS promotional materials.
3 Action Steps for Pharmacy Teams To ensure local GP practices partner with your pharmacy for this target:
1. Reach Out Proactively Contact your local practice manager, prescribing lead, or PCN pharmacy team. Let them know you actively deliver the expanded NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service (including initiation, ongoing supply, and EHC) and offer a short face-to-face or virtual meeting to discuss how you can support their Target 6 action plan.
2. Provide a Simple Service Overview Share a quick 1-page summary or email covering: - Service Scope: Confirmation that your team handles both initial consultations, ongoing pill checks, and EHC.
- Team Capacity: Your consultation room availability and walk-in/appointment times.
- Key Contacts: Direct phone number or email for the practice staff to use for queries.
3. Reassure Practices on Information Sharing Remind GP staff that consultation notifications automatically flow back to the GP system upon patient consent, ensuring clinical records remain up to date without adding administrative burden to practice staff. |
 |
Pharmacies can now access supporting resources to help strengthen collaboration with GP practices on the Pharmacy Contraception Service. This includes a template letter for pharmacies to send to practices, staff scripts to support clear and consistent conversations, and SMS suggestions that practices can use when signposting patients.
These materials are designed to make engagement easier, improve patient awareness, and ensure both sectors are aligned in promoting convenient access to contraception within community pharmacy.

Supporting primary care integration and awareness of the Pharmacy Contraception Service All community pharmacies in the Thames Valley area are asked to note that the Thames Valley Integrated Care Board General Practice Prescribing Scheme is now live. This year’s scheme includes a community pharmacy target, aimed at encouraging stronger collaboration between practices and their local community pharmacy teams. It seeks to improve patient awareness and uptake of the Pharmacy Contraception Service, offering greater choice and helping people access contraception conveniently within their local community, while making full use of the skills and expertise available in community pharmacy settings.
As part of this, practice team members may contact local pharmacies to understand their capacity, agree referral processes and establish effective communication arrangements. Community pharmacies may see increased use of the service as practices raise awareness and signpost eligible patients to the Pharmacy Contraception Service. This work supports integrated primary care working, helping ensure local people can access the right care, in the right place, closer to home, while supporting the valuable role of community pharmacy.
